Born in Murcia, Spain, Maria Luisa Calvo has a background in fine art
and studied haute couture dressmaking at the International School of Design and
Fashion Isa in Madrid, where she specialised in pattern-making and womenswear.
She started her own brand, Coscoletas, a
word originating in southeastern Spain and meaning to give someone a piggyback.
For her, it conjures up roots, happiness and above all the recovery of
illusions. She learned to crochet in childhood and has brought that influence
to bear upon her creations today.
Marie has recently moved to London, where
she took part in the Ideas Tap Popup Shop at BoxPark in Shoreditch over Easter.
Coscoletas crochet products have been
successful in Spain, where they are sold in 10 stores and via her website. Her
products have been featured in magazines including InStyle and Yo Dona.
Maria earned the nickname “Marie Crochet”
in the design world and it has stuck. She has since expanded her line to
include headdresses, bags and womenswear.
“I put special emphasis on careful handmade
finish and avoid the mass industrial production that I think tends to separate
designers from their work.”
Combining urban chic with elegant vintage,
Marie’s designs offer a welcome alternative to high-street couture. Playful,
pragmatic and very pretty.
